The landscape of cloud-based coding is rapidly evolving, and a new player has entered the field, challenging the dominance of platforms like GitHub Codespaces. Daytona, the brainchild of the founders behind Codeanywhere, is set to revolutionize enterprise coding environments by providing a self-hosted solution that allows companies to manage their development processes entirely in-house.
From Codeanywhere to Daytona
Codeanywhere, which emerged in 2013, was akin to a “Google Docs for developers,” enabling collaborative coding from various locations through a web browser. Fast forward to 2023, and the team behind Codeanywhere is back with Daytona, applying their prior experience to a new self-hostable product.
Daytona is designed to help developers manage complex project setups by handling all aspects of development environments, including databases, settings, runtime installations, and more. With Daytona, developers can seamlessly transition into coding on their projects without the hassle of configuring their local tools repeatedly.

What is Daytona’s Solution? Blending Cloud Benefits with Local Security
While cloud-based development offers benefits in terms of accessibility and collaboration, not all companies are comfortable going all-in on the cloud due to security and privacy concerns, especially in regulated industries. Daytona bridges this gap by allowing companies to host it on-premises and integrate it with local IDEs like VS Code, RubyMine, or PHPStorm.
Daytona offers scalability, allowing developers to allocate more resources such as RAM or CPU via the on-prem installation and spin up multiple environments simultaneously. It also standardizes development environments, reducing configuration-related hassles and boosting developer velocity.
“For companies, this translates to faster time-to-market, higher quality software, and ultimately, a better bottom line,” says Daytona’s CEO Ivan Burazin. “It’s about making the development process efficient, manageable, and scalable, which provides a substantial competitive advantage.”
Daytona Securing Pre-Seed Funding
While Daytona quietly launched in early September, it has already attracted attention in the form of $2 million in pre-seed funding. Prominent VC firms and angel investors, including 500 Global, Tiny.vc, Silicon Gardens, Darkmode VC, Firestreak, and founders from well-known developer tooling companies, have invested in the platform.
Currently, Daytona is in a closed beta phase, collaborating with early customers to refine the product. In the future, it will operate on a per-seat model under a commercial license, while also offering a non-commercial license with certain restrictions.
Daytona promises to be a game-changer in the enterprise coding environment, providing companies with a secure, in-house solution that enhances developer productivity, streamlines the development process, and helps businesses gain a competitive edge in the fast-paced world of software development.
“This [first] phase is crucial as it helps us gain first-hand insights and feedback, ensuring that Daytona is polished and ready to hit the ground running,” Burazin said. ”
As for Codeanywhere, well, the founders are basically all-in on Daytona which leaves their previous company somewhat in limbo. Put simply, its days are — more than likely — numbered.
“We’ve hired dedicated engineers to maintain Codeanywhere as to honor its outstanding commitments and help with finding new solutions for current users,” Burazin said. “Our experiences and learnings around spinning infrastructure at Codeanywhere were instrumental in shaping Daytona’s vision. Because of this experience, we are convinced that the future of cloud development will be driven by a top-down approach rather than a bottom-up one, and it most certainly won’t be centered around a browser-based editor.”
